The Bungalows of Rockaway

The Bungalows of Rockaway tells the social and architectural history of the bungalows on Rockaway, an 11-mile barrier reef lining the southeastern edge of New York City.

In 1905, the first bungalow appeared in the Rockaways. By 1933, over 7000 bungalows, and a thriving seaside resort, stood on the Rockaway peninsula. Today, fewer than 500 remain and the resort is long gone.
